If you've agreed to rent an apartment but can't move in immediately, the landlord may ask you for a holding deposit. When the landlord takes your check, he agrees not to rent the unit to anyone else for a stated period of time. You then have the peace of mind to serve notice on your current place and find the first month's rent and security deposit. If you change your mind about moving, the landlord may keep at least some of your deposit.
